I worked on HyperMass as a designer and general artist doing environment modeling, texturing, graphic design, effect animations, and art implementation. The initial production lasted 10 weeks with a team of 8 students from Drexel University in my Junior Year. After that initial 10 weeks of production our game was chosen to continue with a larger team for another 10 weeks of production. During that period of production I continued my general art tasks, and helped our art lead with managing the now 16 person team with 8 artists.

HyperMass is a 2.5D, frantic and zany multiplayer game pitting flying characters against each other in physics-based object throwing battles across the universe. HyperMass draws it’s inspiration from fighting game genres with frantic scrambles for victory. The twist is that players’ characters aren’t fighting each other, but compete to throw objects of different weights on their opponent’s scale. HyperMass contains a ton of different options to personalize your experience, and cater to every kind of playstyle. The player whose scale reaches 100 space pounds first, or has the most weight when time runs out loses.


Controls

Movement:

  • Gamepad- Left Joystick
  • Keyboard- Player 1: WASD / Player 2:Arrow Keys

Turbo:

  • Gamepad- Right Bumper
  • Keyboard- Player 1: Left Shift / Player 2: “.”

Pickup:

  • Gamepad-Hold down A
  • Keyboard-Player 1: Hold down Space, let go to release / Player 2: Hold down Right Shift, let go to release

Bombs:

  • Red – Standard explosive bomb
  • Purple – Gravity bomb (force objects downwards)
  • Green – Lift bomb (lifts up objects making them weightless for a short period of time)
  • Blue – Singularity bomb, sucks in and holds objects wherever the bomb went off

While the game plays the same in both of the following builds there was a near 100% art overhaul in the second term of production. So check out the art in both! The first term final demo only exists as a web demo, so please download and open in a browser other than Google Chrome.
